Alien Covenant

Sorry about the fact I’ve not blogged in a while. To tell you the truth there was nothing I really wanted to share. Hollywood movies are crap lately and the TV shows I normally watch are all on a break.  But this urged me to write.

Director Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant, starring Katherine Waterston (above), will soon arrive in theaters, about five years after Prometheus reignited the sci-fi franchise. Development on a sequel initially moved slowly, so when director Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Elysium) shared concept art for an Alien-related project featuring an aged Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) and Hicks (Michael Biehn) back in early 2015, fan interest skyrocketed.

Blomkamp’s ideas became official soon thereafter with confirmation by Fox and the director that a sequel would be forthcoming. Reportedly, it would take place after the events in James Cameron’s Aliens (below), ignoring what happens in Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection, but Blomkamp still needed to work out where the story would go. Still, Sigourney Weaver expressed her interest in making another installment in the series.

Meanwhile, the Prometheus sequel moved forward and Blomkamp’s project was placed on indefinite hold later in 2015. As the months passed, we also heard about additional prequels that might follow Scott’s film. What about Blomkamp’s possible sequel? When asked in January 2017 what the chances were for his Alien project to be made, Blomkamp replied simply: “Slim.”

Now Ridley Scott has told French publication Allocine (via The Hollywood Reporter) that Blomkamp’s project is not moving forward at all. He says: “There was never a script. It was an idea that evolved from, I believe, a 10-page pitch, and I was meant to be part of the producers on that. It didn’t evolve. Fox decided that they didn’t want to do it and that was it.”

While it would have been fascinating to see what Blomkamp came up with, we’ll just have to content ourselves with Alien: Covenant, which opens in theaters on May 19.
